We are delighted to announce the upcoming hybrid workshop on “Sustainability in Medical Imaging”, which will take place on the 6th October 2026 at the Great Hall, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and online.

This one-day workshop, featuring invited internationally-leading researchers covering latest developments in medical imaging, healthcare and computing sustainability, aims to enhance the UK and international networking, research progress and education in this rapidly emerging area.

Confirmed speakers:

Dr Michael Jackson Consultant Paediatric Radiologist, RHCYP, Edinburgh

Dr Michael Jackson is a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist, based at RHCYP, Edinburgh.He is Lead for Sustainability for his local department and for the Scottish Radiological Society.  He is Chair of the Royal College of Radiology’s sustainability working group and a founding member of the European Society for Radiology’s sustainability sub-committee (also writing the chapter on Sustainable Imaging for the ESR Modern Radiology eBook).Michael has a longstanding interest in both the history of art and radiology, combining these in his book Imagining Imaging (2021).  He is also the current Chair of the British Society for the History of Radiology.
Prof Derek Jones Director of the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC), Cardiff

Derek, an MRI physicist, is Director of the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC), one of Europe’s largest neuroimaging research facilities. With 30 years in microstructural MRI, he has published over 260 peer-reviewed papers, with 49,000+ citations and £68M+ in competitive funding.He’s PI of two Wellcome Discovery Awards: one on typical/atypical neurodevelopment, and another on democratizing neuroimaging through low-field MRI technologies. He leads a multi-site MRC-funded project on multi-scale tissue characterisation, and oversees the EPSRC-funded National Microstructural Imaging Facility. He’s also biomedical imaging lead for the £55M “Imaging Tissue Across Scales” UKRI Infrastructure Fund bid currently being considered by MRC and BBSRC, including £17M to develop the “ultimate” microstructural MRI scanner in Cardiff.Previously he held key positions at King’s College London and the NIH in Maryland.His international roles include: President of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM, 2023–2024); Program Chair for the annual scientific meetings of both ISMRM and the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB); and Deputy Editor for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

He is Fellow of ISMRM and the Royal Society of Biology, and received an MBE (2019) for services to medical imaging.

Prof Stefaan Vandenberghe Head of Medical Image and Signal Processing (MEDISIP), Ghent University (Belgium)

Stefaan Vandenberghe obtained an MSc in Physics (1996) and in Biomedical Engineering (1997) from KU Leuven. After working in the nuclear medicine department of Ghent University Hospital (1997–1999), he completed a PhD in Engineering at Ghent University in 2002. His doctoral research focused on PET gamma camera configurations and list-mode reconstruction techniques.As an FWO postdoctoral researcher, he worked on rotating slat imaging systems, Monte Carlo simulations, and PET reconstruction at Ghent University and the University of Massachusetts. In 2004, he joined Philips Research as Senior Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, where he contributed to the development of the first clinical Time-of-Flight PET systems.He returned to Belgium in 2005 and received the EANM Young Investigator Award in 2007. Since 2007, he has been a full-time research professor at Ghent University and has led the MEDISIP research group since 2008. His research spans PET, SPECT, PET/MR, EEG source localisation, radionuclide dosimetry, monolithic detectors, and total-body PET. He also founded the INFINITY Lab and contributed to two spin-off companies, Molecubes and Nuclivision. His current research focusses on the Walk-Through PET
Dr Edoardo Pasca Head of Computed Tomography and Imaging group, STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

Dr Edoardo Pasca is Head of the Computed Tomography and Imaging group within the Scientific Computing Department at the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). He leads a multidisciplinary team developing advanced algorithms and software for tomographic imaging, including the Synergistic Image Reconstruction Framework (SIRF) and the Core Imaging Library (CIL), supporting national facilities and the broader UK research community.His research focuses on image reconstruction, data interaction, and visualisation for X-ray and multimodal tomography, enabling improved interpretation of complex experimental datasets. He also plays a leading role in collaborative initiatives such as the Collaborative Computational Project in Synergistic Reconstruction for Biomedical Imaging (SyneRBI) and Tomographic Imaging (CCPi), advancing software tools, training, and community capability across academic and industrial research.

  • Computing, e.g. cloud vs on-premises, hardware and software  
  • Reconstruction, e.g. sparse and low-quality data  
  • Medical imaging sustainability, e.g. acquisition protocols, patient handling 
  • Trusted and useful AI, e.g. large vs small models, added value to medical imaging 
  • Evaluation of sustainability, e.g. how to measure carbon footprint, initiatives, accreditations 

The workshop will be preceded by an exciting, community-lead, hackathon event on the same topic on the 5th October 2026 (venue TBC). As well as a networking dinner at a landmark venue in Edinburgh.
